Mission - 1 LAC Along the banks of river Ganga, Munger district, Bihar
Every year Bihar receives an annual rainfall of 1256 mm approximately. From 2009 till 2019, Bihar experienced erratic monsoons with least rainy days. While the memories of havoc caused by floods in 2007 & 2008 are still vivid, the state witnessed 130 deaths due to floods in July 2019 affecting more than 1 crore population. With the growing industrialization and deforestation, the climate change is clearly evident in the state. Soil and Soul Foundation, a Bengaluru based NGO, which is actively involved in activities pertaining to environment & sustainability, proposes to plant 1 lakh slips of vetiver grass along the banks of river Ganga. The ambitious initiative nicknamed “Mission 1 Lac” will be executed on a pilot basis in Munger district in association with Ganganjali (a citizen initiative group in Munger). The project will take-off in March, 2020 with the involvement of women, children & local groups. The project is expected to positively impact the livelihood & well-being of the local communities.
The project aims to improve health and safety of the local communities by
Improving the quality of water
Limiting the damages caused during floods
Enhancing water ecology
Soil and Soul has selected Munger, Bihar for implementation of the project. Munger Town is surrounded by Ganga on the South, West and North sides with the total riverbank measuring approximately 40 kms. The proposed pilot plantation will cover roughly 0.75 km stretch between Dumanta & Soji Ghat. Immediate beneficiaries of this project are the local communities living near the banks of Ganga. The project goals are in direct alignment with two of Union Government’s flagship programs -Swachh Bharat & Namami Gange.
